Star Trek: Nemesis

Age catches up with the Star Trek crew -they find themselves retiring and getting married off. Unfortunately, it's the time Earth picks to face its gravest crisis. Purists were disappointed with this outing - it was the worst box office performer of the series - but non-Trekkies may enjoy the marriage of action and emotion.

In what is rumoured to be the final outing for Star Trek's Next Generation team, Nemesis handsomely fulfils its aim to please non-Trekkies.

This of course, on top of the franchise's ardent fans - you know the ones...loner types into progressive rock and enthusiast's conventions.

Nature versus nurture is at the heart of the battle between Picard (Stewart) and his nemesis Shinzon (Black Hawk Down's Tom Hardy).

The story begins when Shinzon, a clone of a young Jean-Luc Picard, literally dissolves the Romulan senate and installs himself as Praetor, its leader.

Back on earth, in pinky Alaskan hues, it's the wedding day of William Riker (Frakes) and Deanna Troi (Sirtis) and the captain is best man. Star Trek Nemesis

En route to a second ceremony in Troi's homeland, Betazed, Picard receives news of the coup and is sent to discuss a peace treaty with the Praetor.

The action kicks off with a jaunty, off-road desert buggy ride in the Argo, when Picard finds a Data-like android.

Before the mid-air battles take place, there's a battle of wills between baldies Picard and Shinzon.

Some scenes echo Mike Myers' Dr Evil and Mini Me, but it's all harmless fun and doesn't detract from the story.

It's been four years since the below-par Insurrection and the film-makers have obviously spent the time working on a half-decent straightforward plot for the next instalment.

Nemesis isn't that fast-paced (it's certainly not Warp Factor 9) but is action-packed and full of emotion - tears will be shed.

Succumb to its new-age direction of "action over story", special thanks to Stuart Baird. This action movie, vaguely resembling a Trek feature, follows the familiar crew of the Enterprise. Sharp shots and quick action give the film a fresh look but where the film fails is with characterisation. The crew, completely and blatantly ignore the rules set by the previous films and series. An example being the "off road buggy scene", where the characters seem to be living out a mid-life crisis.

After hours of learning about Picard in the previous tv shows and films, his character and mindset does a sudden 180. True the peril level in the film is raised, but the Picard we know wouldn't have made the choices he did in the film - thus it's hard to enjoy watching. This script should have been used with a crew we didnt know... instead we get a film that annoys more than it thrills.

Supposedly the final journey of the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise. A slightly disappointing end perhaps but all in all a reasonable film. Impressive special effects and some stunning battle scenes make up almost entirely for the strong reminders of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Good performance from all the cast, although you couldn't help but feel that many of the supporting cast were under utilised to a large extent. But with a very climatic and emotional end, who cares? Overall not a bad!
