Luc Besson (Subway, Nikita, Leon, The Fifth Element) is a wonderful director of stylish action, but here he opts for a gentler world of deep-sea diving. It may not be the easiest film to sit through, but beautiful to look at all the same. This director's cut has over 40 minutes more of blue sea and stunning locations and the body beautiful of Jean-Marc Barr. the story is a straightforward one about two childhood friends (Barr and Jean Reno) who become diving rivals trying to out do each other in competition by seeing who can stay underwater the longest. Of course tragedy looms, but if you've the patience this is rewarding enough. Rosanna Arquette is engagingly buck-toothed as Barr's long-suffering American girlfriend. Mostly in English, with some subtitled French. - 2 STARS
