Real to Reel
From time to time your brain calls out for a bit of a stretch. You've got the whole evening ahead of you but can't face another inane car chase. What better way to fulfil your cinematic needs, and give that grey matter a bit of a boost, than absorbing some fascinating facts gleaned from a documentary?
If true stories float your boat, and some real life goings on get you going, Sky Movies Indie is the place to be this August.
Don't miss our brilliant week of documentary movies, starting on Monday, August 20th and culminating with the premiere of Z Channel: A Magnificent Obsession .
Z Channel was a bittersweet TV tale of the 80's. The LA based movie channel was well known for its popular policy of screening the longest available cuts of movies, in their original ratios.
Directors such as Quentin Tarantino and Alexander Payne credit Z Channel with being a formative influence on their early development as filmmakers.
James Woods credits Z Channel's championing of Salvador (currently playing on Sky Movies Modern Greats ) with the Oscar nomination he received for his performance.
Z Channel is remembered fondly by its fans as the forerunner of the DVD special editions. It frequently played restored prints and uncovered long lost classics.
Sadly, the channel head, Jerry Harvey cut a tragic figure. He shocked fans and industry figures by bringing about his own violent demise in scandalous and tragic circumstances.
Many claim this is the reason the channel has never received its due recognition.
