The Hulk Eric Bana

Incredible Hulk Facts

Test your knowledge of the green-skinned Goliath

  • The Hulk was originally grey - he changed to green in just his second issue, because creator Stan Lee noticed the printer couldn't get the same shade of grey from page to page.

  • Richard Kiel, who played Jaws in the Bond movies, was the original choice to play The Incredible Hulk in the TV series. He was replaced by Lou Ferrigno after a week of shooting because producers felt he didn't have the right look.

  • Hulk director Ang Lee got tendonitis jumping about in a wired motion capture suit to create the CGI giant.

  • The big fella has fought goodies as well as baddies - including Spider-Man, Wolverine, The Thing and Thor.

  • The first Marvel issue of the Incredible Hulk was released in 1962. Whilst highly acclaimed, it was cancelled after six issues - but quickly reinstated.

  • Producers of the Hulk TV series decided alliterative names like Bruce Banner and Peter Parker were passé and changed Dr Banner's name to David - before casting the alliterative Bill Bixby as the star.

  • The Hulk has worked in the Avengers (Thor, Iron Man, Ant-Man and the Wasp) and the Defenders (the Sub-Mariner, the Silver Surfer, Dr Strange and the Valkyrie).

  • The Hulk was killed off on TV in 1990 in The Death Of The Incredible Hulk; a planned sequel, The Resurrection Of The Incredible Hulk, was never made.

  • The Hulk can be exposed to temperatures up to 1,650C without blistering and has survived temperatures of -120C without freezing. He can create sonic booms by clapping and earthquakes by pounding the ground.

  • Rick Jones, whose trespass onto the G-bomb test site helped create Banner's own Mr Hyde, went on to partner the Hulk, Captain Marvel and even Captain America.

  • The Hulk is not the only angry green giant. We've seen She-Hulk (Bruce's cousin, Jennifer Walters); the razor-clawed green Harpy (girlfriend Betty Ross); and Rick Jones-Hulk.

  • The Hulk has some little known skills. He can see astral projections (spirit forms invisible to humans) and is highly resistant to mind control. His homing ability also takes him back to the New Mexican desert where he was created.

  • The Hulk stands 7ft tall and weighs anything up to 85 stones (544kg), compared to Bruce Banner's 5'9" height and nine-and-a-half stone (59kg) weight.

  • There have been several incarnations - the crafty Grey Hulk, the savage but intelligent Professor Hulk and the animal-like Mindless Hulk.

  • And if you've read this far, here's one none of you will know - our editor's cat is called Kirby, after the Hulk's co-creator Jack!
