Not one for a quiet life Ralph spent his time notching up over a hundred films and making as many TV appearances from the 70s until his death in 1991.
Although he did many films as the leading man - he made more of a name for himself in supporting roles.
In this capacity Ralph excelled himself The Awful Truth (1937) a film for which he earned an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Daniel Leeson, the love rival with Cary Grant for Irene Dunne's affections.
He starred alongside Cary Grant in His Girl Friday (1940) directed by Howard Hawks.
After a stint out of film when he concentrated on his TV career, Gene returned to the silver screen with John Landis' Trading Places (1983), when he played a ruthless Wall Street manipulator and brother to Don Ameche.
Other films that followed include Amazon Women on the Moon (1987) starring Michelle Pfeiffer, and Coming to America (1988) in which he played a cameo role.
The final film he made before his death in 1991 was Pretty Woman (1990), starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere.
