A showcase for the talents of Peter O'Toole, this `life-giving' comedy-romance starts off like an eccentric chiller, but ends up as a sentimental story of medical crisis and what's important in life. O'Toole does very well as the spindly science professor obsessed with `re-creating' his dead wife, while Vincent Spano and Virginia Madsen generate real warmth as the lovers who come under his wing. The ending is over-glutinous, but O'Toole, given the right moments, can still raise a tear.
