A capable international cast attempts the nearly impossible task of carrying off a light comedy about the relationship between George Sand, Chopin and other artists, writers and musicians in 19th century Paris. A good try, too, although you have the uneasy feeling that some of the giggles are unsought and that not all the cast is playing on the same level. Davies does a wicked impression of Glenda Jackson playing George Sand; Thompson enjoys herself voraciously in a supporting but immensely showy part; Julian Sands almost attempts a foreign accent as Liszt; Peters is occasionally embarrassing but sometimes very funny as his wife. Anton Rodgers restrains himself (just) from playing it as Restoration farce. Grant smiles shyly a lot as Chopin. Some of the dialogue is smartly written and you'll get a few chuckles for sure - though you may find it difficult afterwards to describe what kind of film you've just seen.
