O Lucky Man!

Malcolm McDowell plays a coffee salesman on a surreally rambling road trip which takes in orgy clubs and nuclear power stations. Former Animal Alan Price provides the musical score and the whole shebang serves as an allegory against the pitfalls of captalism. The supporting cast ranges from Dad's Army's Arthur Lowe to Helen Mirren in Lindsay Anderson's shapeless epic.

O Lucky Man

This shapeless mass rambles from place to place like a sinister Alice in Wonderland.

Lindsay Anderson's pretentious epic features Mick Travis (Malcolm McDowell repeating his character from Anderson's If... ), as he begins life as a coffee salesman, progresses to patronage of an 'orgy club' (behind the poshest hotel in the North-East), gets tortured when accidentally coming on a nuclear power plant and threatened by a mad surgeon who has turned one patient into a giant pig with a human head (the film is as lavish with its 'grue' as with its sex).

Then maybe the entire film is a joke on the audience, although at more than three hours not all of them may appreciate it.

Alan Price's vigorous music is an instant hit, which is more than you can say for the film.

This is one of the most interesting British movies of the 70s - Mcdowell's perfromance as Mick Travis is marvellous, acting alongside a stellar British cast - Helen Mirren, Arthur Lowe, Rachel Roberts and others. Director Lindsay Anderson has made a unique satire about English society seen through the eyes of one man, and with a great, toe-tapping soundtrack by Alan Price. A classic film you can watch over and over again. Best scene - Mick being seduced by a vicar's wife in a church - love it.
