To Kill A Mockingbird

Gregory Peck finally won a Best Actor Oscar, at the fifth time of being nominated, for his compassionate performance in this classic race-hate drama, directed by Robert Mulligan from Horton Foote's script (which won the film's other Oscar).

Peck gives a fine character reading of a lawyer and widowed father of two children, who has to defend a black man accused of raping a white girl in a Deep South town in the Thirties.

But it's the child actors who steal every scene in which they appear. Mary Badham, a nine-year-old who had never acted before, is truly charming as the tough little sister who tries to keep pace with her brother, but ends up having to wear a dress, however embarrassing it is to her.

This is still Peck's favourite film from a varied career.

Original author Harper Lee, who based the story on her own childhood experiences, was so pleased with his work that she gave him her father's pocket watch.

This film is amazing and has such a strong, deep theme. I loved every moment of it. I have begun to read the book and it's just as brilliant as the film. I would definetly recommend this film and the book to anyone!

'Shoot all the Bluejays you want, if you can hit 'em, but remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird.' And it's a sin to not admire the beauty of this film. Harper Lee did a brilliant job bringing us this story to our shelves and Robert Mulligan did even better bringing it to our screens. A story that can move you in the simplest way and leave you blown away. This movie grabbed me from my school desk and never let go. It's a film every child should see and evey man grow old with.

This is an amazing story which makes you think a lot about your life and your opinions. It has absolutely brilliant performances by Gregory Peck and Mary Badham, as demonstrated by Gregory Peck winning the Oscar for best actor. I studied this book recently for my exams and I also watched this film and it is my favourite film. It also has my favourite actor in it.
