Alan Arkin, of all people, plays a down-on-his-luck drunken superhero in this delightfully daft spoof. Rejected by America, Captain Invincible has disappeared. Years later, the evil Mr Midnight (Christopher Lee) threatens the world and the search is on for the Captain. Authentic looking newsreel footage sets the scene at the beginning of the film and there are a couple of wonderfully campy and incongruous song and dance numbers. Arkin takes himself just seriously enough to make it all work well and, not to be outdone, Lee is gloriously over the top as the villain. It's all complete rubbish of course, but done with enough tongue-in-cheek panache to make it enormous fun.
