The young Jeff Bridges brings all his incandescent charm to his early role as hard-driving hillbilly stock-car racer Elroy 'Junior' Jackson in this appealing Seventies action comedy outing, adroitly handled by Lamont Johnson. William Roberts's freewheeling script (adapting Tom Wolfe's stories) does the right thing by the characters and the easy-coasting plotlines, and the movie's quick to get into top gear and stay there. Another little neglected gem of the American cinema of the Seventies: a high time, it turned out.
