Alan Arkin gives a powerful central performance in this true story of a Lithuanian seaman's abortive attempt to defect in 1970. Simas Kudirka jumped from his ship to an American coast guard cutter off New Hampshire in a brave bid for freedom. Arkin, always an impressvie actor, adept at both drama and comedy, maintains his own high standards here and gives depth and colour to his character. Mind you, he's not out on his own, as there's also fine work from Donald Pleasence and Richard Jordan. The story is both intellegent and exciting, thanks to a good script from Bruce Feldman and Emmy Award-wining direction from David Lowell Rich.
