Harriet Beecher Stowe's melodramatic anti-slavery novel caused a furore on its publication in 1852. This good-looking, if slightly over-worthy, adaptation of the story is enhanced by some top-notch and very moving performances from Avery Brooks as the noble-hearted and long-suffering Uncle Tom and Phylicia Rashad (from 'The Cosby Show') as the slave woman Eliza. Edward Woodward is also on the mark as Simon Legree. The script borders on the dreary, but director Stan Lathan gives the film momentum and creates some fine moments of suspense.
