Futuristic fantasy films don't come much more bizarre than this French effort, set in a post-Apocalyptic world where cannibalism is rife. An unsuspecting circus clown is drawn into the dark and mysterious world of a mad butcher when he answers an advertisement for a job. Little does he suspect what he's really dishing up for customers... Directors Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro acknowledge a heavy influence from the American Coen brothers, of Fargo and The Big Lebowski fame. They share a similar off-the-wall visual style which will either enthral you or irritate you intensely. One thing's for sure: you won't see a more cleverly scripted or eerily shot film for a long time.
