Anthology piece from Paramount with three stories from 'the other side' emanating from source material penned by none other than Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Stephen King and Beetlejuice writer Michael McDowell. The best segment is McDowell's Lover's Vow, about a gargoyle which comes to life. The other sections are more routine. George A Romero's adaptation of Stephen King's Cat From Hell is lifted by the casting of David Johansen as a hit man assigned to kill a black cat. The curtainraiser, Lot 249, is a mummy-comes-back-to-life yarn by the creator of Sherlock Holmes which is boosted by yet another Jack Nicholson-esque performance by Christian Slater. The thread of the movie is held by Deborah Harry as she listens to her son's (Matthew Lawrence) grisly stories.
