Quirky is the word for this slice of small town Americana, notable only for a flashy performance by Winona Ryder as the local eccentric, Dinky Bossetti. Dinky, who writes poetry and never brushes her hair, is a 15-year-old oddball who comes to believe that homecoming Hollywood vamp Roxy Carmichael is her real-life mother. Director Jim Abrahams (of Airplane! fame) pulls his film in too many directions. Is it a satire on small town life, a growing pains drama or a search-for true identitity? Abrahams and scvreenwriter Karen Leigh Hopkins can't seem to make up their minds and the viewer suffers for their indecision. The film has rarely been seen in this country and no Ryder fan will want to miss her performance here, which is on a par with Heathers and infinitely superior to her indifferent work in Little Women, Great Balls of Fire! and Edward Scissorhands.
