There's a nice irony in the casting of Jason Connery, son of James Bond star Sean Connery, in this biopic of the early years of Bond's creator, author Ian Fleming. While Jason is no great shakes as an actor and has none of his father's sexual charisma or animal magnetism, he doesn't disgrace himself either. The film fictionalises incidents in the life of the best-selling author, but it's like watching a Bond film without any of the spectacle or high drama. There's little continuity to the various bedroom and spying exploits on behalf of British Naval Intelligence and the result is a waste of the talent involved. Patricia Hodge makes the biggest impression as Fleming's haughty society mother, Lady Evelyn, who uses her incredible financial influence to advance her son in society.
