The comedy Western hasn't proved too happy a hunting ground for Hollywood, and here, as so often, the makers go over the top with an idea about buried gold and the squabble for it. Great cast of Western veterans, most of them giving wild-eyed performances, all have to yield second-best to laconic James Coburn, as the anti-hero, and Joan Blondell as a blowsy bordello madam. It helps if you realise from the outset that this is a comedy, so perhaps it can be enjoyed more on the small screen.
