This tedious film is like a flower power comedy of 25 years ago. Sissy (Uma Thurman), born with abnormally long thumbs, is a professional hitchhiker (she has to hitch every day when her thumbs get stiff and sore). Thanks to her work as a part-time model for the transvestite Countess (John Hurt), she ends up at the Rubber Rose Ranch, a kinky establishment currently in danger of being taken over by the lesbian cowgirls who hover on its fringes. Sissy falls heavily for the leader, Bonanza Jellybean (Rain Phoenix - hard to know which name is sillier), and helps the cowgirls in their fight to breed a flock of whooping cranes. A cross between a number of movies from the late Sixties, this is the kind of film where characters look at each other through a hole in a piece of toast and a string quartet plays in a field. As you'll have gathered, the thumb total of this foolish frolic is not very much.
