This romantic comedy is a treasure trove for country-and-western fans with a soundtrack that features songs by Willie Nelson, Billy Vera (who has an acting role, too), Emmylou Harris and John Mayall. It also is of particular note for the earliest featured role of Julia Roberts. The script giddy-ups at a fair click as it weaves its spell about a bar in cactus country catering to an odd assortment of drifters, dreamers and schemers. Central to the story is Lesley Ann Warren as a waitress who thirsts for fame as a songwriter. She gives a thoroughly convincing portrayal of a honky-tonk woman that successfuly avoids cliché.
