The changes in life for everyday Americans towards the end of World War Two are put under the microscope as this TV movie looks at a typical household. Barnard Hughes is a touch over the top as the central character, a pig-headed grandfather, editor of the local newspaper and the town's moral arbiter for many years. As old ways and ideas give way to the new, he finds life difficult on the home front as his alienated son (Bill Pullman), reported 'missing in action' in Europe, suddenly reappears. Unfortunately the film is more interested in the look of the period than substance and realistic events.
