An intimate knowledge of the rules of basketball might help you a little here; but not much. This is a fairly uninteresting sports drama about the 'buying' of star students for university teams, with an over-the-top performance from Nick Nolte as the true-blue coach who sinks to corruption in order to assemble a winning team. J T Walsh is his usual loathsome self as the brains behind the bribes, and Mary McDonnell uncharacteristically damp as Nolte's supportive ex-wife. Basketball fans may be encouraged to go along by the presence of several junior greats (including the mighty Shaquille O'Neal) as members of Nolte's squad, and all of them prove serviceable actors. For the rest of us, though, there's little to cheer for here. Give me Beau Chumps any day.
