Here come John Wayne and Kirk Douglas as the fastest guns in the territory in a Western that sits well with such other big Wayne hits of the Sixties as The Comancheros and El Dorado. Douglas is hired to kill Wayne but you know he won't and soon the two are happily in harness against the hired guns. 'Mine hit the ground first! ' claims Douglas as two of their enemies bite the dust. 'Huh,' grunts Wayne. 'Mine was taller.' Add Howard Keel, bizarrely cast as a renegade Redskin who calls his brethren 'dumb Indians' and a succulent cast of villains that includes Bruce Cabot, Bruce Dern and Gene Evans and you have a Western with humour that director Burt Kennedy keeps solidly and comfortably in the best traditions.
