A romantic Western in which Dennis Hopper gives one of his warmest performances, as an outlaw who, tired of failure at robbing trains, tries life in a tiny Texas town. Here he fails, too - to keep jobs, to avoid seduction by his best friend's wife, to steer clear of the sheriff, Mean John (Ben Johnson), to keep his past from becoming public and, finally, to resist the temptation to rob the firm where he stokes the boiler. But he meets some rich characters on the way, and eventually makes his exit in a flying machine invented by a dotty 'preacher'. An old-fashioned film, swinging the cinematic pendulum back to the Fifties, and putting entertainment commendably before total authenticity.
