Director Ben Stiller (who also plays a leading role) chooses to give us quite a chunk of this dose of post-graduate blues on home videos shot by the characters. It's trying to the eyes and hardly cinema either. Not that you'll want to trouble yourself with the unconvincing problems of a dishevelled quartet of wannabes, who share a cluttered bedsit. Two of them, Winona Ryder and Ethan Hawke, are obviously destined to end up together and it seems an eternity before they realise what the rest of us could have told them during the opening credits. These are tiresome twentysomethings from the start and they don't get any better. See it for the star-studded cast (Janeane Garofalo, Steve Zahn and Renée Zellweger are also in it) if you must, but you could be stomping off to bed 10 minutes from the end when the dialogue reaches an all-time low, as Hawke declares he has 'a planet of regret sitting on my shoulders'. We know what he means.
