One Sided Love, Actually

Martine McCutcheon goes for the total immersion approach...

Method acting generally garners multiple back patting for actors who completely immerse themselves in a role to get it spot on.

So bless Martine McCutcheon when she says she did some serious method acting in her love scenes with Hugh Grant for their film, Love Actually.

It doesn't really compare to Daniel Day Lewis spending time in a wheelchair to prepare for his role as quadriplegic Christy Brown in My Left Foot (1989).

Or Robert De Niro putting on four and a half stone for Raging Bull (1980) and then losing it within the same film to play boxing hero Jake La Motta - as part of his preparation he even took part in three real boxing matches.

Not quite in the same league, perhaps Martine spent some quiet evenings in, imagining she was Hugh's lover and kissing the inside of her elbow?

Maybe, but actually what Martine meant was that she so enjoyed snogging Hugh that she became a perfectionist and insisted on numerous takes until they got it just perfect - not quite method acting so to speak, more 'indulging'.

Not one from the less is more school, she said: "I have to say it was an honour to kiss Mr Grant.

I had to go again on numerous occasions because I didn't quite feel I had got the moment right.

"I thought I'd go for a bit of method acting." We bet you did.

The cheeky cocky added: "There were tongues on some takes, when the director asks for tongues, you must give tongues."

The ever-obedient Martine plays a Downing Street tea lady who attracts the attention of the new PM played by Hugh...and it's not her pinny and doilies that he so admires.

The film is a directorial debut for Richard Curtis, the screenplay writer behind such films as Four Weddings And A Funeral, Notting Hill, both Bridget Jones films, as well the TV series Blackadder, Mr Bean and The Vicar Of Dibley.

Judging by the stellar cast, which includes Liam Neeson, Colin Firth, Alan Rickman, Billy Bob Thornton, Keira Knightley, Rowan Atkinson and Emma Thompson, it should be an impressive film... and we know for sure the love scenes between Hugh and Martine are well rehearsed.
