A powerful if slightly disappointing end to Oliver Stone's Vietnam trilogy, started with Platoon and Born on the Fourth of July. Hiep Thi Li is excellent as a young Vietnamese girl who moves from an idyllic peasant childhood to a nightmare of suffering in Vietnam and after. Tommy Lee Jones is on blistering form as the G. I. who brings her to the US, and Debbie Reynolds has a strong guest star role as her mother-in-law. It's painful to watch at times but the acting and film-making are of the highest order and the ending is an emotional blast.
