The combination of novelist Stephen King and George A Romero had a hit-and-miss film start with Creepshow, and the pattern is very much repeated in this rather long adaptation of a King story with some strikingly nasty moments (mostly involving a digitally realised flock of vengeful birds that would have even given Hitchcock a frisson of pleasure). The opening operation for a brain tumour which proves to be all that was left of Timothy Hutton's unborn twin may also make you look the other way. Horror fans won't be surprised to learn that that's not the end of the twin who proves to be the dark half of the title. Slack scripting by director Romero pegs this one back in spite of a bravura performance by Hutton as the very different brothers.
