Westerns don't seem to have the enthusiastic following they used to, which perhaps explains why this absorbing based-on-fact story was largely ignored by cinemagoers. They missed out. The pursuit and capture of famed renegade Apache Geronimo (Wes Studi) makes for exciting viewing. And star Jason Patric (as the cavalry officer hunting Geronimo) is backed up by acting heavyweights Gene Hackman and Robert Duvall. Okay, the thrust of the story could have been harder hitting and, although the film's sympathies lie with the Apache leader, Geronimo himself doesn't get the screen time that perhaps he should. Even so, director Walter Hill has created a Western tale that should satisfy fans of the genre.
