The Cisco Kid is a sort of Robin Hood of the Wild West crossed with The Lone Ranger and Don Quixote. In this comic romp, as played by ex-NYPD Blue cop Jimmy Smits, he comes across as an engaging, vain, womanising wise guy. His sidekick, Pancho, comes vividly to life thanks to an engaging performance by Cheech Marin. The sets and scenery are other big pluses in a production that only falters in the dodgy Latino and French accents from the likes of Sadie Frost, Bruce Payne and Ron Perlman. The nifty direction is by Luis Valdez, turning in his most enjoyable film since La Bamba.
