Not at all like director Richard Linklater's previous films, Slacker and Dazed and Confused, but unfortunately just as tedious. It's hard to see how anyone thought this story could work in this day and age, and certainly with writing of such poor quality. A French girl meets an American student on a train and stops off with him in Vienna, where they wander around falling in love. Julie Delpy as the girl is an actress of some charm; but opposite her she has Ethan Hawke, an actor of limited expression and no charm at all. In any case, both of them are soon bested by the dialogue. 'Why is it,' asks Hawke, 'that a dog sleeping in the sun is beautiful, but a guy trying to get money out of a bank in the street looks like a moron? ' Ah, there's depth for you. And this lad's no fool. 'That's the Danube over there,' says Delpy. 'Ah, 'says Ethan, quick as a flash. 'That's the river, right? ' When he tells us, though, that he's 'sick of myself because I'm with myself all the time' he does at least have us on his side.
