A study in desperation and loneliness. The title refers to Pruitt Taylor Vince, at 250 pounds a very overweight pizza chef who lives with his mother (Shelley Winters) and develops a crush on the new waitress at his restaurant - which is hardly surprising, as she's played by the lissom Liv Tyler. The dingy atmosphere of the pizza bar and of the leading character's home is clinically caught in this quietly haunting piece that's much in contrast to debutant director James Mangold's later work with Copland, Girl, Interrupted and Kate & Leopold. And Mangold neatly avoids the tragic ending you might be expecting, in favour of a more mundane but upbeat conclusion.
