This Australian film about the coming of age of a schoolgirl during the Second World War follows a pretty well-worn path along the coming-of-age trail. But because it's familiar ground the film has no real surprises and very little dramatic tension. Miranda Otto plays Emma, who is 14 when the story opens in 1942, and gives the most vigorous performance in the film. Lee Remick, as her mother, is disappointing. Although the film captures the wartime period well, it drifts along at it's own uneven pace.
