Down Periscope

Frasier's Kelsey Grammer plays a maverick submarine commander put in charge of the USS Stingray, an out-of-date World War II wreck crewed by a bunch of misfits. It's their mission to destroy a dummy battleship before a nuclear powered rival. Good-natured, genial slapstick from an arch exponent of the art.

Down Periscope

A jolly Police Academy-style navy lark starring Frasier's Kelsey Grammer.

He plays a maverick officer ordered by a vengeful superior (played by Bruce Dern) to skipper a rusty old World War Two submarine - complete with crew of misfits - in a series of war games.

It's an old plot and the humour rarely rises above schoolboy level, but, for all that, this is a good-natured film with Grammer a likeable lead and the now star-billed Rob Schneider a wacky support.

This was an unexpected delight of a film. I thought it was a nice blend of the old; 'an unlikely group of people try to overcome the odds' and action adventure. I can be a prude sometimes when it comes to comedy but it did make me laugh with its 'silly' humour. Not a lot of thinking involved with this one. Thumbs up!
