There's nothing wrong with Anthony Hopkins's barnstorming turn as the Spanish artist Pablo Picasso. He gets a brilliant handle on the man's massive ego and sexual appetite. But this Merchant Ivory film is very much a one-sided, and none-too-persuasive take on the great man, as seen through the eyes of his long-suffering mistress Françoise Gilot (Natascha McElhone), who stayed with him for a decade. The resulting long, pretty-looking picture seems even longer than it is, with its one-note script and shortage of information and opinion on what really matters - the art. Not one of Merhant Ivory's best.
