Independence Day

American president Bill Pullman, boffin Jeff Goldblum and fighter pilot Will Smith battle to save the day when nasty extraterrestrials pitch up, leaving grim calling cards in Europe before moving onto America. It's jingoistic hokum from a master of the art - director Roland Emmerich - but outrageously enjoyable nonetheless. Spielberg's War of the Worlds shows a nastier side of the sci-fi coin.

Remember those aliens that invaded our screens in the Fifties in old films like Earth Versus the Flying Saucers?

Well, they make a spectacular comeback here - on a mega-million-dollar budget.

Lifeless characters, effects that vary from cheesy to breathtaking and impossible jingoism are all on show as America, with a little help from stereotypes around the world, puts paid to the power-hungry invaders.

Very silly, but tremendously enjoyable stuff, with adrenalin-rushing action that will have you cheering for the world's forces, led by Will Smith, Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblum, and booing that nasty mother-ship from outer space.

One really scary moment among all the glitz occurs during an alien autopsy, so get ready to shut your eyes if you don't want to see the result.

I'm an Italian man from Rome and live and work in Montclair, Jersey City, USA. I'm married to a Korean-American. I have seen this so many times and it's the best I've ever seen.

Now this is Hollywood doing what it does best! BIG explosions and BIG stars and Big plot?.... Well you can't have all three here but with the first two coming in bucketloads you somehow don't care about the plot. A sure-fire way to spend an enjoyable hour or two chilling out and cheering on the good guys.
