Musician Richard Dreyfuss takes a teaching job to make ends meet. We see his initial failure with the class, his first successes, the birth of his deaf son and his constant battles with the deputy head (W H Macy) -- and it all ends up years later with his concerto. Dreyfuss is ideal and there are some excellent moments in this terrific old-style weepie, which is extremely well made and acted, but could easily be shorn of half an hour.
