A rambunctious if rather improbable Western, in which veteran Kris Kristofferson and greenhorn Scott Bairstow bust out of a ghastly 1830s Louisiana penal colony and, after sundry adventures on the road, join Sam Houston's Texas volunteers at the time of the Alamo. Tom Skerriitt seems somewhat ill-at-ease as Houston, but the laconic Peter Coyote makes an excellent Jim Bowie while Kristofferson and Bairstow fit nicely into their roles. Nice production design by Cary White - scenes in a swamp, the aftermath of the Alamo and the Battle of San Jacinto are especially impressive - complement energetic direction by Rod Hardy, The weak link is the script, which gives the actors no help in establishing relationships. Western fans, however, will find this one worth the ride.
