Danny Glover stars and was executive producer on this intelligent, well-crafted, visually splendid made-for-cable Western, in which he plays Sgt Washington who, on the wounding of their white officer, takes over the command of a US cavalry troop comprised mainly of former slaves, who are sent to fight native Americans. In a very intriguing moral dilemma, one of many probed in the film, it's he who must organise the massacre of an Apache tribe under the brave warrior Vittorio. The need to inform and explain has produced a slightly lecturing teleplay that acts against the film's overall success; we could have had the messages and still enjoyed the action and impact. Nevertheless, this is a rather fine, ambitious movie for television that transcends the usual boundaries of its kind. Directed by Hill Street Blues's Charles Haid.
