This occasionally angst-ridden modern tale of a feminist's coming-of-age during the Sixties, Seventies and Eighties is rather morose and downbeat, which makes it surprising that it's based on a multi-award winning play. Jamie Lee Curtis plays Heidi, whose path through life seems to lack fulfilment and avoid happiness. Curtis and a strong supporting cast (that includes Tom Hulce, Kim Cattrall and Peter Friedman) give good value but are let down by Paul Bogart's stilted direction. Playwright Wendy Wasserstein adapted the play for the screen and, although she has made modifications, its stage origins are fairly obvious. Not a small screen success, perhaps, but there's still enough here to enjoy.
