Despite some shaky moments and a tone that is distinctly off-kilter, actor Griffin Dunne's first film as director is a black romantic comedy to savour.
Meg Ryan and Matthew Broderick are effectively cast against type as jilted lovers who set out jointly to stalk and get their revenge on their ex-partners who've moved in together.
Hitchcock would have liked a creepy plot and eerie tone that owe just a little to his Psycho, and that's got to be the ultimate compliment.
Broderick and Ryan manage to get by without pressing the buttons on their trademark charm - and their performances are all the better for it.
The only slight problem is that Dunne's inexperiences shows in pacing and mood; otherwise a pretty good try at a tricky theme.
Only the sharpest eyes will pick out Richard Dreyfuss's guest spot as an astronomer.
