This addition to the series gives us a new heroine in Batgirl (Alicia Silverstone), two new villains in Mr Freeze (Arnold Schwarzenegger) and Poison Ivy (Uma Thurman, stealing the show with her Mae West impersonation) and even a new Batman in ER's George Clooney. He slips easily in to the traditional cape and that painful-looking Batsuit, while Arnie tries to freeze Gotham City and Uma plans a takeover of the world by plants. Awesome sets don't quite dominate the amusing characters here, but the film is hit by occasional pretensions beyond its comic-strip status, some dodgy model work and a few patches almost as ponderous as Arnie in his ice-suit. Good fun though with lots of high-velocity action: fans will have few grumbles.
