The Calvin Klein model first attracted attention as the boy who befriends a mentally handicapped murderer in Billy Bob Thornton's Oscar-winning Sling Blade.
Without any formal training, he made his feature debut aged 11 opposite Kevin Costner in the 1994 drama The War.
The role lead to his appearance in the supernatural TV drama American Gothic and subsequently Sling Blade and Ghosts of the Mississippi.
In 1998, he starred in the big screen version of the X-Files and appeared in the comedy drama Crazy in Alabama.
He re-teamed with Billy Bob Thornton for the Western All The Pretty Horses and starred alongside Jude Law in the drama Cold Mountain in 2003.
Recent work includes the American football drama Friday Night Lights, again with Billy Bob Thornton.
