The broad sweep of this warm-hearted family-oriented tale will be familiar: Rocky Holzcek (Peter Falk), a tough Polish immigrant, brings up his grandson Michael (DB Sweeney) after the boy's parents are killed, getting him through medical school.
But their roles are reversed when Grandpa has to move in with Michael and his wife. Cue domestic friction.
This could end up wallowing in cliché and sentimentality, but thanks to a decent script, a dash of humour and some fine playing, especially by Falk, it's a genuinely enjoyable film.
Julianne Moore and Ellen Burstyn complete a strong star quartet.
