The former music video director hit the big time with the gritty police thriller Training Day, starring Denzel Washington.
The movie about corrupt LA cop Alonzo Harris landed Washington a best actor Academy Award and co-star Ethan Hawke was also Oscar-nominated.
After working as a music video director for acts including Prince, Stevie Wonder and Toni Braxton, he won an MTV award for Coolio's Gangsta's Paradise.
His debut feature was action movie The Replacement Killers, starring Mira Sorvino and Hong Kong veteran Chow Yun Fat in his Hollywood debut.
Fuqua's second film - Bait - starred Jamie Foxx starred as an inept petty thief who becomes ensnared in a web to catch a master criminal.
Next up was Training Day, which he followed with Africa-set action thriller Tears of the Sun with Bruce Willis and Monica Bellucci.
Upcoming projects include a realistic take on the legend of King Arthur, starring Clive Owen and Keira Knightley.
