Not so much Death in Venice as Death in Kensington. A dryasdust English author (John Hurt), recently widowed, conceives a hopeless homosexual passion for a hunky American star (Jason Priestley) of drive-in movies, one of which, playing at a local cinema, Hurt has wandered into by accident. Although it starts stickily, with dialogue best described as naff, and a thoroughly annoying performance by Sheila Hancock as Hurt's housekeeper, this otherwise beautifully shot and immaculately acted film does improve once Hurt decides to go to America to pursue the man of his dreams. And Hurt and Priestley later combine to make a potentially icky ending quite a touching affair.
