Borrowing heftily from such cinema films as Total Recall and The Truman Show, this nonetheless ingenious telefilm stars Timothy Hutton as an ordinary guy who discovers his whole life is a fake: his wife is an actress, his every move is monitored and he himself has been cybernetically rebuilt as a kind of Six Million Dollar Family Man. Kidnapping the 'wife' (Suzy Amis), Hutton goes on the run, hotly pursued by a clutch of scientists led by mad-eyed John Glover. This starts tremendously well, but soon sinks into sentimentality as it struggles through the quicksands of sickly melodrama in search of an unlikely happy ending.
