Strong for its first hour, this child abuse/custody drama rather loses its way towards the end instead of gathering power. Little Ollie (sad-eyed Sam Bould) is being beaten by the lover (Jason Flemyng) og his mother (Joely Richardson). But the boy refuses to tell his father (Martin Donovan) whose own position is complicated by the fact that he has recently 'come out' and now lives with his gay lover (Ian Hart). So far, so gripping. But subsequent courtroom scenes are rather melodramatically written, and overplayed. And the resolution of the tale is curously unsatisfactory - probably like real life - but dramatically underfed. Good performances from Donovan, Richardson and the boy. Flemyng and Hart, although not bad, are less convincing.
