Malcolm McDowell forsakes his long line of crazed baddies to rejoice in a film part most actors would give a wide berth to - a schizophrenic in a Moscow mental hospital convinced that he killed Tsar Nicholas II. Such a role could only produce such a rum kettle of celluloid fish as this - an offputtingly lowkey historical and psychological drama - though it's possible to extend some grudging admiration to McDowell for his sterling efforts. But it takes some swallowing that his doctor would try to treat him by pretending to be the tsar! File in the curio section of your video cupboard.
