Davenport's big break came when he wrote to John Cleese to ask to be a runner...and ended up playing a zookeeper in Fierce Creatures.
The son of actress Maria Aitken and actor Nigel Davenport then went on to become a household name for the role of barrister Miles in TV's This Life.
Big screen work has included The Talented Mr Ripley and a high profile role in the Disney caper Pirates of the Caribbean.
He studied Literature and Film Studies at the University of East Anglia before getting his early leg-up from Cleese.
He played a modern day vampire in Ultraviolet and went on to star in The Wisdom of Crocodiles.
In 2000, the call came for Mr Ripley in which Davenport was "the chap in the duffle coat jumping up and down in the background!". .
Subsequent roles have included World War II drama The Bunker, Offending Angels and Look and he also scored a hit with TV's Coupling.
Hollywood came calling to cast him as stiff upper lipped English sea captain Norrington in the Disney hit Pirates of the Caribbean opposite Johnny Depp.
In 2005, he starred in the Anglo-American rom-com The Wedding Date alongside Dermot Mulroney and Debra Messing.
